Under the terms of the 1989 Children Act, it is illegal for an unregistered childcare provider or person to look after children. Registered childcare providers includes: childminders, day nurseries, pre schools (playgroups), out of school clubs, creches, children's centres and holiday play schemes. They are inspected and registered by Ofsted. They are given a unique registration number and they must display their Ofsted certificate to show that they are registered as childminders or other daycare providers. They must also have appropriate childcare insurance and a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) clearance certificate.
